Is Data Security Really a Myth?

As a business owner, you’ve probably heard about how important data security can be for your company. But with the overwhelming amount of data protection services available, you may find yourself wondering whether or not the protection is really worth it? Of course, it is! Data security is no myth— let us tell you why.

To Improve Brand Value, Trust, and Growth

A data breach is any security violation in which sensitive data is copied or viewed by someone who is unauthorized to have access to the information in question. When a company has a data breach, its reputation and brand value tend to be damaged because its customers are shown that they cannot trust the company to protect the data that is collected from them.

To Prevent Breaches

In many cases, some of your company’s data is actually your customer’s data, your employee’s data, etc. For example, your company’s data probably includes all of your employee’s tax and payroll information. This data can also include the debit or credit card numbers of your customers.

It is an unfortunate reality that there are people out there who want to get this information and will go to any lengths to get it, no matter how secure you think your data may be.

What Can Cause a Breach?

One of the primary causes of data breaches is weak, reused, or stolen passwords. While hacking is also a common cause of data breaches, it has been reported that over 75% of this “hacking” is really a result of the wrong person getting ahold of a password.

Another main cause of data breaches recently has been malware. This is any type of malicious software that can be downloaded without the user's knowledge in order to open up access for the hacker who wrote the malware. This is why it is important to be wary of suspicious websites or emails.

What Can You Do to Protect Yourself from These Threats?

One of the simplest ways to protect yourself from the threat of a data breach is to make sure that passwords are only given to those who need them. That way, there is as little chance as possible of sensitive information getting into the wrong hands. Sensitive information should only be available to highly trained employees who absolutely need access to it. It’s also important to improve the overall security of your company by implementing preventative measures such as firewalls or VPNs, as well as monitoring and restricting online traffic.

Of course, even with these preventative measures in place, there is never a guarantee that your company will be 100% protected against data breaches. This is why it’s important to know what to do and who to talk to in the event of a data breach or other data security issue. After all, we’re here to help you keep your information safe.
